“With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
- Inscription on the Statue of Liberty
America has always been known as a nation that is open to immigrants. Though new immigrants have not always realized their dreams of a better life, many others have accomplished that and much more. Today, increasing numbers continue to arrive each year with the same dream.
Can we accommodate them? Should we accommodate them? These questions should be considered from the point of view of the immigrants themselves, and also from the perspective of American citizens whose quality of life might be affected by immigration policies.
